A question for reflection

OK, now for my theological post of the day:

I was listening to a sermon while running today (John Piper of course) and he asked a very loaded question. So, I thought I would post it here and see what some of my readers think (assuming of course anyone is actually reading this today). Please post your thoughts/comments and I'll post a follow-up in a couple of days with my thoughts.

I'm going to have to paraphrase because I don't remember the exact wording. But here goes:

"Would you prefer if God made much of us or if He enabled us to make much of Him?"

Or perhaps in other words, is the crux of Christianity about improving my self-esteem and self-worth or about living to glorify God?

I don't think we should choose between the two because they serve each other. I doubt that it glorifies God in any way for me to feel badly about myself. If that's how I feel, then people probably don't see God in me, and therefore my ministry is also handicapped. We also open ourselves up to other problems when we have low self esteem: we are more easily tempted into certain sins, and we don't radiate peace, love, joy, etc. We just aren't good advertisements for Christ when we are in that frame of mind.

I honestly think that the bible is clear that we are made to glorify God...it's our purpose. Now often, as a side effect, we have high self esteem because we are living a purposeful life.

Depends on whether you're asking which one do I want or which one should I want. Obviously, I should want to glorify God and that should be my highest goal. But too often, if not always, I put my own concerns and desires above that, both in my prayer life and my daily routine. (Now that you mention it, I think "self-esteem" is a bunch of liberal, hippy bull-crap that some idiot invented in the 70's to neuter children. That's a topic for another day though.)
